A
The greening of planes, trains and automobiles
Moving goods and people around the world is responsible for a large part of global CO₂ emissions(排放). As the world races to decarbonize everything, it faces particular problems with transportation—which accounts for about a quarter of our energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Here's the breakdown of the emissions in 2018 for different modes of transport.
The fuels for transport need to be not just green, cheap and powerful, but also lightweight and safe enough to be carried around. Each mode of transport has its specific fuel needs. Much is still to be settled, but here are some of the solutions to get us going green.
PLANES—Synthetic hydrocarbons The hardest sector to decarbonize is aviation. One long-term option for sustainable fuel for planes is to make hydrocarbons from recycled air.
CARS—Batteries Batteries are energy-efficient and electric cars can plug into existing systems and services. New solid-state batteries will take a car farther on a single charge.
TRAINS—Electricity Some trains are already electrified through rails or wires; others can be made electric in pretty simple ways.
TRUCKS—Hydrogen fuel cells Hydrogen fuel cells are a lighter choice than batteries for trucks, but making green hydrogen is expensive.
SHIPS—Liquid ammonia Liquid ammonia is easy to keep and transport, but it is hard to ignite(点燃) and requires an engine redesign.
This energy transition(变革) is global, and the amount of renewable energy the world will need is "a little bit mind-blowing," says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It's estimated that the global demand for electricity could more than double by 2050. Fortunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up to the task. "We need to speed up the development of green energy, and it will all get used," says Wipke.
-
What percentage of global transport emissions did road vehicles account for in 2018? A. 11.6%. B. 45.1%. C. 74.5%. D. 86.1%.
-
Which mode of transport can go green comparatively easily? A. Planes. B. Trucks. C. Trains. D. Ships.
-
What does Wipke suggest regarding energy transition? A. Limiting fuel consumption. B. Putting more effort into renewables. C. Improving energy efficiency. D. Making electricity more affordable.
B
In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A's, and a modern-day Juliet who died for love. None of them were real—they were the fictional creations of my students, who were using a new AI tool to help write stories.
At first, I was excited. The AI helped my students overcome the dreaded blank page. Even the quietest students were suddenly producing pages of text. But as I read their work, I noticed something troubling: the stories all sounded the same. The AI favored certain plots and phrases, and my students' unique voices were being buried under the AI's suggestions.
I realized then that the tool was doing too much of the thinking for them. Writing isn't just about producing words—it's about making choices, finding your voice, and expressing your own ideas. If students let AI do that for them, they're not learning to write; they're learning to dictate.
So I changed my approach. I still let students use AI, but only as a brainstorming partner, not a co-author. They could use it to generate ideas or check grammar, but the writing had to be their own. The results were remarkable: students who had struggled to write a paragraph were now crafting thoughtful essays with genuine voice.
The lesson I learned is that AI can be a powerful educational tool, but only if we use it to enhance human creativity, not replace it. In the classroom, the most important voice is the student's own.
-
What initially excited the author about AI in writing class? A. Students produced more creative stories. B. Students overcame the fear of blank pages. C. Students improved their grammar quickly. D. Students developed unique writing voices.
-
What troubled the author about the AI-assisted stories? A. They contained many grammatical errors. B. They were too short and underdeveloped. C. They lacked individual voices and sounded similar. D. They copied from published books.
-
How did the author adjust the use of AI? A. By banning it entirely from the classroom. B. By limiting it to brainstorming and grammar checking. C. By requiring students to write first and then use AI. D. By having students compare AI and human writing.
-
What is the main message of the passage? A. AI should not be used in education. B. AI can enhance creativity if used properly. C. Students prefer AI over traditional writing. D. Writing skills are no longer important.

An exhibition at the Jiushi Art Museum in Shanghai is featuring artwork inspired by Go, or weiqi in Chinese, 56 originated in China more than 4,000 years ago. Go is one of 57 earliest binary-based(基于二元的) games. The movements of the black and white pieces reflect the basic ideas of Eastern philosophy, according to Tu Ningning, who is in charge of the exhibition.
"The exhibition brings together Go culture, cutting-edge technology and contemporary art," says Tu. "We hope 58 (present) the rather abstract Go game and AI in a visual context, and initiate dialogues with minimalist art, conceptual art and expressionism."
"In a Go game, each move should serve a long-term goal. You try to lead the opponent into your trap and force them to follow your '59 (guide)' till they lose," explains Wang Wei, a Go player among the visitors to the exhibition. "The players' personalities 60 (reveal) during the game, and one's weaknesses are exposed to the opponent," she adds. "A decent winner always 61 (try) to beat the opponent 62 no more than one or two points as a gesture(姿态) of respect for the other side."
Tu says that the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the 63 (strategy) placement of the pieces, 64 the energy flow following each move inspired artists to create oil paintings, sculptures, 65 (digital) generated pictures and silk-screen prints for the exhibition.

- Paragraph 1: I realized it was me who was at fault.
- Paragraph 2: With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door.
Paragraph 1: I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voicemail, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon.
Paragraph 2: With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged—something we hadn't done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. "Thank you," he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother's leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing.

Dear Chris,
I'm writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
Upon arriving at the park, I was immediately struck by the moving scene, where a team of environmental enthusiasts was conducting a water cleanliness drive. They were diligently removing debris from the water and educating passersby about the importance of keeping our water bodies clean. Moreover, some volunteers, armed with gloves and trash bags, were collecting litter and recyclables, ensuring the park remained pristine. I immediately captured these moments in my artwork.
Not only was painting outdoors a refreshing change, but it also enabled me to realize the importance of our role in preserving the environment. Moreover, it was a sensory feast that heightened my appreciation for the beauty of our natural world even more. Needless to say, it was a day filled with creativity and a sense of peace.
Looking forward to hearing about your adventures!
Yours, Li Hua
- Paragraph 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news.
- Paragraph 2: Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised.
Paragraph 1: I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. I can't remember the exact words of what I said to him then. It's a bit of a blur. It goes something like this, "I know we've just met. But I really need to get on this bus. Otherwise I have to spend the night here which will be bloody expensive." I further promised that I'll return in four days and settle the fare with an extra amount for his trouble. Then the impossible happened. He nodded his head simply, comforting me "It's ok. I trust you." With the biggest smile you can imagine flashing on my face, I boarded the bus and exchanged our phone numbers, promising to call him then.
Paragraph 2: Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. Judging from his voice, he's overjoyed to hear from me. The moment we met at the airport where he works from, we embraced tightly like long lost friends. Gunter admitted frankly that he wasn't sure if I was going to show up. Then I paid the fare and insisted repaying Gunter with the extra €10 tip I had promised, which he would not accept by no means. Things have changed since we were kids. We were often told that fairytales exist no more. Well. They are wrong. Fairytales DO exist. The invisible knights in shining armour, who we call angels or kindred spirits, do exist in this world. If my faith in humanity was wavering, Gunter restored it.

Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula(芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.
In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, "food waste goes against the moral grain," as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month's cover story. It's jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away—from "ugly" (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.
Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, "if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world."
So what can be done? Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time—but for him, it's more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished(有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.
Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don't think. "Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won't eat," Curtin says.

- Paragraph 1: We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.
- Paragraph 2: I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
Paragraph 1: We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Obviously, he was trying to hide his depression. Holding his hands, I said gently, "David, do you still remember what I told you before your first practice in the cross-country team?" "Yes," he murmured, "You said 'you are not different unless you think you are'." "And that's exactly what I am telling you now," I held up his face so that I could look him straight in the eyes, "No one laughs at a person who is trying hard." It was clear that he was touched by these words. With lights sparkling in his eyes, David sat up and raised his head, saying, "I'll take part in the race."
Paragraph 2: I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. "Ready... Go!" The judge declared. Every other child ran fast to the best of their ability, leaving David behind. Surprised at his awkward posture at first, the audiences soon realized his weakness and let out a storm of cheers. I secretly followed him along the route. I saw sweats running down his cheeks, along with a determined look that I was familiar with. For sure, he finished last. But in the last km, many kids, including his schoolmates and those I didn't know, kept him company along the way. Tears welling up in my eyes, I couldn't feel prouder of David. That was exactly what made my job meaningful.
